In a significant development for the energy sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to dedicate the NTPC Darlipali Super Thermal Power Station (2×800 MW), NSPCL Rourkela PP-II Expansion Project (1×250 MW), and lay the foundation stone for the NTPC Talcher Thermal Power Project, Stage-III (2×660 MW) during a special program in Sambalpur on February 3, 2024. These projects boast a combined investment of Rs 28,978 Crore.

The Darlipali Super Thermal Power Station, located in the Sundargarh district of Odisha, operates as a pit-head Power Station with Supercritical (highly efficient) Technology. It plays a crucial role in supplying low-cost power to beneficiary states, including Odisha, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Gujarat, and Sikkim.

The NSPCL Rourkela PP-II Expansion Project, a 250 MW initiative by NTPC-SAIL Power Company Ltd, is strategically placed within the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). This project aims to provide reliable power to the steel plant, supporting its role in economic growth.

Additionally, NTPC is spearheading the Talcher Thermal Power Project, Stage-III, in the Angul district of Odisha. Situated within the premises of the old Talcher Thermal Power Station (TTPS), which was acquired by NTPC from the Odisha State Electricity Board in 1995, the new project employs highly efficient Ultra Super Critical Technology. With a capacity approximately three times that of the old TTPS plant, this venture will contribute low-cost power to states such as Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Assam.

The Talcher Thermal Power Project, Stage-III, is constructed with advanced environmental features, including an efficient electrostatic precipitator, flue gas desulphurization, bio-mass cofiring, and covered storage space for coal. These elements ensure reduced Specific Coal Consumption and CO2 emissions.

Beyond their impact on the energy sector, these projects have generated direct and indirect employment opportunities in the region. They have also played a pivotal role in enhancing physical infrastructure, encompassing areas like approach roads, drainage systems, transportation, and communication facilities.

NTPC, in collaboration with the local communities, has initiated various development projects focusing on education, drinking water, sanitation, health, women empowerment, rural sports, etc. Notably, NTPC has established a Medical College cum Hospital in Sundargarh, Odisha, further contributing to the region’s healthcare infrastructure.
