NTPC Ltd., India’s leading integrated power utility, has unveiled plans to bolster its installed capacity by 5GW, signaling a firm commitment to delivering clean, reliable, and affordable energy solutions across the nation.
The company’s strategic roadmap aims to augment renewable energy (RE) capacity by 3GW, underscoring its unwavering dedication to environmental sustainability. Concurrently, NTPC is poised to enhance its thermal energy capacity by an additional 2GW, thereby fortifying India’s energy infrastructure.
In the fiscal year 2023-24, NTPC marked a significant milestone by successfully integrating 3,924 MW of fresh capacity into its portfolio, propelling its cumulative installed capacity to nearly 76 GW. Currently, the conglomerate operates with an RE capacity of 3.5 GW, boasting a robust pipeline that surpasses 20 GW.
Looking ahead to 2032, NTPC envisions expanding its non-fossil fuel-based capacity to constitute 45-50 percent of its overall portfolio, which includes a target of 60 GW RE capacity, ultimately aiming for a total portfolio of 130 GW.
NTPC’s exemplary performance was further highlighted by its record-breaking annual generation of 422 billion Units (BU) in FY 2023-24, witnessing a commendable growth of nearly 6% compared to the preceding fiscal year.
During the same fiscal year, NTPC’s coal stations achieved an impressive plant load factor (PLF) of 77 percent, demonstrating operational efficiency and reliability.
Notably, NTPC achieved a historic milestone with its highest single-day generation of 1428 Million Units (MU) on September 1st, 2023. This achievement underscores the prowess of NTPC’s engineers, exemplary operation, and maintenance practices, along with robust systems.
Furthermore, the company reported a substantial 55% growth in coal despatch from its captive mines during FY24 compared to the previous year. NTPC’s coal despatch reached 34.15 MMT, while coal production stood at 34.38 MMT, showcasing a remarkable growth of nearly 50 percent by the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024.
NTPC’s noteworthy accomplishments in FY24 also include the commissioning of the 2nd unit in Bangladesh, along with maiden capacity additions by both NGEL and NREL, further solidifying its position as a key player in the energy sector.
