ABB joins Grid4EU consortium to support reduction of carbon emissions

Greentech Lead America: ABB has announced its involvement
in Grid4EU, a consortium of 27 partners that aims to support the reduction of
carbon emissions by improving efficiency and facilitating demand response in
electrical distribution networks.

The new consortium will focus on the large-scale demonstration of solutions for
distribution networks that can be replicated and implemented in Europe at the
end of the project.

The Grid4EU partnership includes six European distribution system operators, as
well as electricity retailers, manufacturers and research organizations. The
consortium will operate for a period of 51 months that began in November 2011,
when the European Commission officially signed the agreement.

The Grid4EU project includes six large-scale, smart grid demonstration networks
in six different countries. ABB will participate in three of these networks,
working with RWE in Germany, Vattenfall in Sweden and CEZ in the Czech Republic.

Pike Research ranks ABB as leading player in transmission and
distribution infrastructure market

Recently, Pike Research ranked ABB, the Swiss industrial
giant as the leading player in transmission and distribution infrastructure,
and Boeing with Siemens in a strategic alliance to serve the U.S. military, as
well as San Diego Gas & Electric one of the leading utilities in this
space. Green Energy Corporation is addressing the interoperability of various
controls and communications platforms being deployed for microgrids.

Pike
Research’s report says Microgrids still face significant barriers to wide
scale adoption. As of 2012, not a single national government has developed an
integrated or comprehensive policy creating a viable, vibrant market for
customer-driven microgrids.
