Axpo Signs 10-Year Tolling Deal for Zelestra’s 830 MWh Battery Project in Italy

Axpo has signed a 10-year tolling agreement with Zelestra for a 207 MW/830 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northern Italy. Under the agreement, Axpo will optimise and trade the battery’s capacity in wholesale electricity markets, providing Zelestra with stable long-term revenues that support project financing. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with commercial operations expected in 2028. The standalone BESS project will enhance grid flexibility, improve renewable energy integration and strengthen Italy’s electricity system as wind and solar capacity continue to expand. The agreement marks Zelestra’s second major tolling contract in Italy during July 2026, reinforcing the growing role of long-term commercial structures in accelerating utility-scale battery storage deployment across Europe.

Enertis Applus+ Supports 2 GWh UK Battery Storage Project

Enertis Applus+ has been appointed to provide technical advisory and engineering services for the 500 MW/2,000 MWh Braston/Wallace Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Scotland, one of the UK’s largest standalone battery projects. The company will support the project through engineering, quality assurance, technical due diligence and construction oversight, helping ensure the facility meets performance, safety and bankability requirements. The 2 GWh battery system is designed to improve grid flexibility, store surplus renewable electricity and enhance the integration of Scotland’s growing wind generation. The appointment highlights Enertis Applus+’ expanding role in the UK energy storage market, where utility-scale BESS projects are becoming critical to achieving the country’s Clean Power 2030 and long-term net-zero objectives.

South African Consortium to Build 184 MW Solar Park with Battery Storage

A South African consortium comprising JUWI Renewable Energies South Africa, JUWI Energy, and Subsolar has been awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for a 184 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project featuring co-located battery energy storage. The utility-scale development will supply reliable renewable electricity while using the integrated battery system to store excess solar generation for dispatch during periods of high demand or reduced sunlight. The hybrid project is expected to strengthen grid stability, improve energy security and support South Africa’s transition to a cleaner power system by delivering more flexible renewable energy. The award further reinforces JUWI’s growing presence in South Africa’s renewable energy sector, where hybrid solar-plus-storage projects are playing an increasingly important role in meeting rising electricity demand and reducing dependence on conventional generation.
