Toyota will deliver new hybrid vehicles for selected Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) on the fifth-year of the Toyota Green Initiative, an environmental stewardship platform popularized among HBCU students and alumni for encouraging a sustainable lifestyle.
The contribution is a part of the Toyota’s support of HBCU athletic programs in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Twenty-two HBCUs will get a Toyota Prius this year.
Launched in 2010, Toyota Green Initiative (TGI) toured HBCU campuses to engage students in the environmental space.
Besides, TGI sponsors athletic events for CIAA and SWAC that helps to increase awareness regarding the program.
An overwhelming response is received to TGI from both CIAA and SWAC supporters. The Prius aims to promote sustainability efforts among students, alumni and local community, said James Colon, VP, African-American Business Strategies, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A.
Vehicle deliveries began in September to HBCUs in North Carolina and Texas. The delivery tour will conclude in October with presentations to Magic City Classic rivals Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University.
