Chinese automaker BYD is to deliver 50 all electric e6 model cars to Uruguay. These vehicles will operate as taxis in Montevideo, InsideEVs reports.

The vehicles were being tested for operation in Montevideo since February.

Earlier, BYD had delivered 45 e6 cars to Bogota, Colombia supplementing the taxi fleet there.

Uruguay has about 5,000 taxis, 3,000 of which run in the capital Montevideo. The batch of electric vehicles from BYD, the first of a proposed lot, makes up about 1 percent of the volume now and will be subsequently increased.

The Uruguayan government plans to offer subsidies and other incentives to taxi operators willing to switch to electric taxis. Altogether, a single pure electric taxi in Uruguay will receive the equivalent to $100,000 in subsidies, according to the report.

The government is also working to promote installation of charging facilities.
