Masdar and Jordan Collaborate on 1GW Wind Project and Green Hydrogen Feasibility Study

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company– Masdar, a leading clean energy provider, has joined forces with the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in a landmark agreement to develop a 1 gigawatt (GW) wind project featuring a battery energy storage system (BESS).

Additionally, both parties have initiated a feasibility study exploring the establishment of a green hydrogen plant.

The agreements were formalized at COP28, where Masdar’s CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, and Jordan’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, signed the documents. Witnessing the signing ceremony were distinguished leaders including UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, COP28 President, and Masdar Chairman Dr Sultan Al Jaber, along with Jordan’s Minister of Environment, Dr Muawieh Khalid Radaideh.

The comprehensive study aims to assess the viability of setting up a green hydrogen facility near The Port of Aqaba. Leveraging desalinated seawater and dedicated renewable power, this project seeks to produce competitively priced hydrogen.

Masdar’s existing presence in Jordan, notably through its Baynouna Solar Energy Company (BSCE) joint venture, underscores its commitment to the region’s sustainable energy. The joint venture inaugurated the 200MW Baynouna Solar Park earlier this year, marking the largest clean energy project in Jordan.

Masdar’s overarching vision includes targeting 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen production by 2030, aligning with the UAE’s aspirations to establish itself as a green hydrogen hub and secure 25 percent of the global low-carbon hydrogen market by 2030.
