Wind turbine leader Vestas reveals cyber security incident

Wind turbine maker Vestas said it was impacted by cyber security incident on 19 November 2021.

Vestas has shut down its IT systems across multiple business units and locations to contain the issue. Vestas did not reveal its IT partners. The wind turbine leader will be sharing more details later.

“As part of our crisis management setup for cyber security, we are working together with our internal and external partners to contain the issue and recover our systems,” Vestas said in a media statement.

Vestas believes that its customers, employees and other stakeholders may be affected by the shutdown of several of ITsystems.

Vestas has generated revenue of EUR 3.536 billion and EBIT before special items of EUR 101 million in the second quarter of 2021. The value of the wind turbine order backlog was EUR 21.2 billion as at 30 June 2021.

In addition to the wind turbine order backlog, at the end of June 2021, Vestas had service agreements with expected contractual future revenue of EUR 26.9 billion. The value of the combined backlog of wind turbine orders and service agreements stood at EUR 48.1 billion – an increase of EUR 13.0 billion compared to the year-earlier period.
