Vestas said Iberdrola has placed a 99 MW order for the repowering of the Molar de Molinar and Isabela wind parks in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain.

The contracts include 11 V150-4.5 MW and 11 V136-4.5 MW wind turbines, along with a 10-year Active Output Management (AOM 4000) service agreement. The 22 new turbines will replace 139 legacy models, increasing energy output by 30 percent.

Grants from the Spanish Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE) enabled the dismantling of old turbines and adaptation of foundations and connections for the new machines, reducing environmental impact.

Vestas highlights the potential of repowering older turbines with advanced 4 MW technology, emphasizing its reliability for Spain’s renewable grid.

Spain, with 9.9 GW of turbines turning 20 years or older by 2025, is poised for significant repowering projects. The new turbines will cut CO2 emissions by 53,000 tonnes annually, with local manufacturing of blades and towers supporting the project’s low carbon footprint.

Turbine delivery is set for Q2 2025, with commissioning by Q4 2025.

Vestas has installed over 5.3 GW of capacity in Spain since 1991.
