RWE has decided to repower the Muel wind farm in Spain, replacing 27 turbines with 3 modern 6.6 MW turbines, increasing total capacity from 16.2 MW to 19.8 MW. Construction will begin in spring 2025, with commissioning scheduled for the end of the year. A Power Purchase Agreement has been secured for the project, which has also received funding from the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility.
The repowering project highlights the potential of modernizing Spain’s ageing wind energy infrastructure, significantly increasing energy output while reducing land use. The Muel wind farm, in operation for 26 years, exemplifies the benefits of upgrading older facilities to state-of-the-art technology for cost-effective renewable energy expansion.
Spain’s onshore wind market is poised for substantial growth, with around 20 GW of capacity over 20 years old by 2030. Repowering these facilities represents a major opportunity to boost renewable energy production, minimize environmental impact, and enhance integration into the electricity system through advanced turbines.
RWE Renewables Iberia, a leading player in Spain’s energy transition, operates 18 onshore wind farms with a capacity of 500 MW and seven large-scale solar power plants totaling 300 MWac, driving forward green energy initiatives across the Iberian Peninsula.
