MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, has signed an agreement with Skovgaard Invest ApS and Energicenter Nord for the supply of four V164-8.0 MW offshore wind turbines for the Velling Mærsk project in Western Denmark.

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind is a joint venture between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Vestas Wind. The agreement will cater to the phase two development of V164-8.0 MW offshore wind turbine project.

The turbines will be used for testing the installation methods and operation and maintenance of the turbine onshore. The project consists of a 20 year AOM 5000 service agreement with the first five years of operation dedicated for testing. Installation works will begin by 2015.

Jens Tommerup, CEO, MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, said, “This joint venture indicates that the turbine development technology is on track. This order for turbines is an initial step towards serial production. The performance and efficiency of the wind turbines before taking offshore will be checked. There is a real sense of community surrounding the Velling- Mærsk project.”

The region has been the primary area for testing of Vestas turbines for the past 15 years, including the installation and testing of the V112-3.0 MW turbine. Around 75 percent of the wind park will be sold off to local land owners under the agreement.
