Honda Transmission America is benefitting surplus energy production from the two wind turbines installed by Juhl Energy in January.

The wind turbines have exceeded the power output by 6.3 percent and have contributed towards lowered carbon emissions helping Honda to attain the goal of reducing environmental impact from products and manufacturing operations by 2020.

This includes a 30 percent reduction in CO2 emissions from Honda products, plants and other operations, compared with year 2000 levels.

The two turbines were initially projected to produce 10,000 MWH of electricity per year, accounting for 10 percent of the plant’s annual needs. The turbines have outclassed company forecasts soon after the operation began. In April, they provided 16.26 percent of the plant’s power requirements.

These turbines make the Russells Point in Ohio plant the first major automotive facility in the US to receive enough power from on-site wind turbines.

The project was developed and installed by Juhl Energy from Minnesota and are owned by ConEdison Solutions.

The performance of the two on-site wind turbines is achieving results better than what Honda had anticipated. From the onset, the site location selected would allow the GE turbines to produce a significant amount of facility’s’ energy requirements, stated, Tyler Juhl, vice president, Operations, Juhl Energy.

ConEdison Solutions are highly committed to customers as well as to support Honda in implementing its innovative energy program at Russells Point. With this initiative, Honda has set an example for the American manufacturing sector, said, Michael W. Gibson, vice president, Energy Services, ConEdison Solutions.

To achieve their new environmental targets, Honda is accelerating its efforts to advance the environmental performance of its products, and its operations throughout North America.
