Ghana to produce 200 MW wind power by 2016

Swiss wind farm developer NEK Umwelttechnik plans to develop the Ayitepa Wind Farm of 200 megawatts to meet 10 per cent of the Ghana’s total electricity generation capacity, reports GhanaWeb.

Energy and Petroleum Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah emphasized the need for other energy sources to enhance generation capacity in Ghana.

The wind power project is a part of government’s plan to generate 1o percent of the country’s energy mix from renewable sources by 2020.

The management has to ensure that all necessary licensing and requirements are addressed. Further, government has streamlined investor friendly policies for smooth execution of projects.

The company’s decision to invest in Ghana’s renewable energy sector was influenced by the enthusiasm in America and Europe about Ghana and prospects in the energy sector, Eddie O’Connor, CEO, Mainstream Renewable Power.

The Wind Farm project is scheduled to begin generating electricity in less than 18 months from start of construction.
