Vestas has won a 810 MW offshore wind order from Equinor to supply 54 V236-15.0 MW turbines for New York’s Empire Wind 1 offshore wind project.

Equinor recently said Empire Wind 1 will be America’s first offshore wind project to plug directly into the New York City grid with a target to deliver first power in late 2026.

At a strike price of $155.00 per MW/h Empire Wind 1 project is expected to deliver forward looking real base project returns within the guided range for renewable projects, Molly Morris, president of Equinor Renewables Americas, said earlier.

Equinor has already executed the Purchase and Sale Agreement (PSA) with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) for the renewable power from Empire Wind 1 offshore wind project.

Empire Wind 1 will generate more than 1,000 union jobs during the construction phase. Equinor is aiming to bring a partner for the project.

This order represents Vestas’ first U.S. offshore platform deal and includes the delivery, commissioning, and a comprehensive five-year service agreement to ensure optimized performance, followed by long-term service support.

Laura Beane, President of Vestas North America, expressed her pride in partnering with Equinor, emphasizing the milestone as a major step in advancing clean energy solutions and strengthening the U.S. offshore wind market.

Doreen M. Harris, President and CEO of NYSERDA, remarked that the agreement supports New York’s ambitious renewable energy goals and marks another milestone in the development of the Empire Wind 1 project.

Vestas’ offshore wind turbine, the V236-15.0 MW, which secured type certification last year, has already proven its reliability with over 13 GW of firm orders globally. The turbine’s proven performance will play a key role in achieving New York’s clean energy targets, according to Josh Irwin, Senior Vice President of Offshore Sales at Vestas North America.

The Empire Wind 1 project will also enhance the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT), transforming it into one of the largest dedicated offshore wind port facilities in the U.S. The terminal will support the deployment of the V236-15.0 MW turbines by handling the staging, pre-assembly, and transportation of components before installation.

Vestas, one of the leading wind turbine makers in the world, anticipates turbine delivery to begin in 2026, with project completion set for 2027, solidifying its commitment to building a lasting U.S. offshore wind supply chain.
