Greentech Lead America: Deepwater Wind is the highest bidder in an auction to build a wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Deepwater Wind is the provisional winner with a bid of $3.8 million. The initial auction was carried out for two blocks. Two other companies also participated in the bid.
This auction marks the first such by the U.S for offshore wind power leases, according to the Interior Department. There are no offshore wind farms in the United States, though several are being developed.
The area is more than 10 miles off Rhode Island between and to the south of Block Island and Martha’s Vineyard.
According to Tommy Beaudreau, director of Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), this is a historic in the future of clean energy in the U.S. He also added the final bid has surpassed their expectation.
