A collaboration of packaging industry participants, The Recycling Partnership, has formed an initiative designed to encourage residential recycling in the U.S.
The collaboration includes Amcor Rigid Plastics, Alcoa Foundation, American Chemistry Council, American Forest & Paper Association, the Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers, Ball Corp., Carton Council, Coca-Cola, Society of the Plastics Industry, and Sonoco Products.
The collaboration will leverage one-time private investments with public funding to support recycling in several cities.
The technical and financial assistance target four areas. They include ensuring municipal households are served by large roll carts, bolstering support from local and state-elected officials, creating strategies across the entire recycling value chain to ensure best management practices for municipal recycling, and increasing recycling participation and reducing contamination in the recycling stream.
According to Mike Schmitt, president, Amcor Rigid Plastics, the program brings together all parts of the packaging value chain and has the ability to rapidly scale recycling efforts across the nation.
