Renewable energy developer SunEdison is to establish nine solar projects with total installed capacity of 3 megawatts DC in Alameda County, California.

The company has signed the agreement with Alameda county authorities under the second phase of the Regional Renewable Energy Procurement Program (R-REP).

Tha aim of R-REP is to bring renewable energy to public facilities throughout the Bay Area.

And the project covers 19 public agencies working together to purchase 31 MW of renewable energy systems across 186 facilities.

Sites where renewable energy projects are to be developed under R-REP include community centers, libraries, fire stations, medical facilities, city halls and educational institutions.

In the first phase of R-REP, SunEdison was awarded more than 18 megawatt of DC solar with 9 different Bay Area public agencies, including 11 MW with Alameda County.

In the latest phase, the company won all the bids it made, including the Santa Rita Jail and other administration and functional centers.

According to a statement, the county would save a projected $9.5 million over the life of the projects.

Recently, SunEdison made it to the list of preferred bidders for an 86-megawatt DC solar photovoltaic project in South Africa.

The project was part of the fourth round auction of projects under Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP) being implemented by the ministry of energy of South Africa.

Named Droogfontein 2, the project is to be developed 20 kilometers south of Kimberly in the Northern Cape Province. And the national utility of South Africa, Eskom, has entered a 20-year power purchase agreement with the project.

Droogfontein 2 will produce adequate electricity to power 45,000 South African homes.

SunEdison had entered the South African market in 2011. It has already developed 130 megawatts of utility scale solar power projects in that country, according to the statement.

Once completed, the Droogfontein 2 solar power plant, too, will be operated and maintained by SunEdison.
