RWE has launched a new photovoltaic plant in Bedburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, as part of its ongoing efforts to expand its solar energy portfolio.

The facility, constructed on recultivated land near the A 44 motorway, has a peak capacity of 20 MW (15.7 MWac) and was completed in six months. Equipped with over 36,600 solar modules, the plant will generate enough clean energy to supply approximately 5,400 German households annually.

This is part of RWE’s commitment to invest about 11 billion euros in green generation capacity in Germany by 2030.

Katja Wunschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, emphasized the company’s commitment to accelerating the solar expansion: “We are putting every effort into expanding our solar portfolio, and this includes using sites alongside motorways, like the one here in Bedburg.”

RWE is developing renewable energy projects in the Rhenish lignite region. Adjacent to the Bedburg plant, RWE is also trialing an Agri-PV demonstration plant that combines agriculture with solar power generation. In the area, the company already operates five large solar projects, four of which include integrated battery storage systems.

RWE operates wind and solar farms with a combined installed capacity of about 700 MW. As part of its green growth strategy, RWE is continuously scouting for new locations to further bolster its renewable energy projects across the country.
