By Greentech Lead Team: The Rajkot Municipal Corporation
(RMC) plans to install solar panels on the roof of Madhavrao Scindia
International Cricket Stadium on Race Course Road, Rajkot. The energy generated
by these panels will power nearly 40,000 streetlights on Rajkot roads.

Rajkot Municipal Corporation has invited international
bids for preparing a detailed project report for its Solar Power Cricket
Stadium. Proposals have been invited from qualified and experienced consultancy
firms and institutes.

“We thought that if the stadium’s roof which has a
usable area of approximately 5,500 square metres could be converted into a
solar panel. The energy thus generated could be used to light up the stadium
during the matches as well as the street lights,'” said Ajay Bhadoo,
commissioner, RMC.

The Rs 30 crore project will also help RMC save electricity
bills, presently, the 40,000 street lights consume 10.88 MW electricity per
year and the civic body pays Rs 5 crore as bills, according to an article in
timesofindia.com.

“We have initiated an administrative process in this
regard and floated an advertisement for the appointment of the consultant for
the same. Soon, a project proposal shall be submitted to Gujarat Energy
Development Agency (GEDA) and the Union ministry for new and renewable energy,
for financial assistance. We will apply under the Clean Energy Fund of Prime
Minister’s Scheme,'” said a senior RMC official.

Recently, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and
Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) jointly implemented
a
100 kilowatt solar power project for Memco sports complex located in north zone
of the city.
