Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO), a subsidiary of NiSource, has announced the completion and operation of its first two solar projects in Indiana. The Indiana Crossroads and Dunns Bridge I Solar projects are now online, providing cost-effective and cleaner energy to homes and businesses throughout the state.

Indiana Crossroads Solar is a 200-megawatt (MW) solar facility situated in White County, Indiana. The project was developed and constructed by EDP Renewables North America (EDPR NA). In addition to its environmental benefits, Indiana Crossroads Solar is expected to bring significant economic advantages to the state and White County.

The project will provide $2.6 million in Economic Development Agreement funds, which can be utilized by the county for priority and special projects. Over the 35-year lifespan of the project, the solar park is projected to contribute more than $42 million in property tax payments, thereby reducing the property tax burden on other families and businesses in White County.

Sandhya Ganapathy, Chief Executive Officer of EDP Renewables North America, expressed delight at the completion of the Indiana Crossroads Solar Park. She emphasized the positive impact of clean energy projects on Hoosier communities and the state of Indiana, both in terms of investment and economic benefits, as well as contributing to the ongoing energy transition.

Dunns Bridge I Solar is a 265 MW facility located in Jasper County, Indiana, near NIPSCO’s R.M. Schahfer Generating Station, which is set to be retired in 2025. This solar facility is part of a larger project, with Dunns Bridge II currently under construction. Once complete, Dunns Bridge II, spanning Jasper and Starke counties, will generate 435 MW of solar power coupled with 75 MW of battery storage. Together, Dunns Bridge I and II are projected to generate approximately $59 million in additional tax revenue for Jasper and Starke counties over the lifespan of the facilities.

These solar projects represent NIPSCO’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio and transitioning to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources. By bringing these solar facilities online, NIPSCO is taking significant strides towards providing affordable, clean energy to its customers while supporting local economies and reducing the environmental impact of energy generation in Indiana.
