Duke Energy has partnered with the Department of the Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps to set up a 13 MW solar facility at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Onslow County, N.C.

The facility will be grid connected at the Duke Energy Progress (DEP) owned substation located in military property. Camp Lejeune will purchase power from DEP.

The plant owned and operated by DEP is expected to be online by 2015.

Crowder Construction Services will be responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction.

The project will use monocrystalline solar panels supplied by SolarWorld Americas in Oregon.

Besides, GE Power will supply its Brilliance 2-stage Ultra tracking inverters.

It is expected that the new project could provide power to about 3,000 homes.

This partnership with US defense department will help Duke Energy diversify its energy mix and meet the renewable energy target of the region.

Last month, North Carolina Utilities Commission has approved $500 million investment by Duke Energy in solar power to produce 278 megawatts of electricity.

The utility will build three solar-generating facilities in addition to purchasing power from five plants to meet state’s renewable energy requirement.
