In a significant milestone for renewable energy, D. E. Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI) and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) announced that the Drew Solar facility has reached commercial operation.
Drew Solar, a 100 MWac solar energy facility situated in Imperial County, California, started its operations in December 2022.
Under a power purchase agreement with SMUD, Drew Solar is expected to play a pivotal role in generating clean energy to power approximately 30,000 homes annually, as confirmed by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Lora Anguay, Chief Zero Carbon Officer at SMUD, emphasized the importance of collaborative partnerships and the expansion of renewable energy in achieving their vision for a carbon-free energy future.
Hy Martin, Chief Development Officer of DESRI, expressed his team’s satisfaction in bringing this affordable and reliable clean energy project online to serve SMUD and the California electricity system. “This solar project grows our longstanding relationship with SMUD to deliver renewable energy to its customers and support their Zero Carbon Plan.”
SOLV Energy, serving as the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor, played a crucial role in making the Drew Solar facility a reality. They will also provide ongoing operations and maintenance services to ensure the facility’s continued success. The Navajo Tribal Utility Authority and Bona Terra Energy were instrumental in the co-development of the project, showcasing the collaborative effort required for such a significant achievement.
Drew Solar’s commercial operation represents a remarkable step forward in the pursuit of sustainable, clean energy solutions, furthering California’s commitment to a greener, more environmentally responsible future.
