BSNL, NEDO talks on adopting solar energy for telecom sector

BSNL, an Indian telecom operator, and NEDO, Japan’s technology firm, are conducting joint discussions on utilizing solar energy for telecom network, reported The Hindu.

Chief officials of both organizations held a talk on the possibilities of substituting conventional energy with solar resources.  This initiative comes after a directive from the Prime Minister to initiate efforts on Carbon reduction.

Both the organizations met in the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s forthcoming Japan visit.

bsnl towerNew Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) is Japan’s semi-government organization promoting introduction and development of innovative energy technologies, reported The Hindu.

TERI, In India, has a tie-up with NEDO to promote renewable energy.

By 2015, telecom companies have to shift 50 percent of rural and 20 percent of their urban mobile towers to hybrid power as per government directions, says the report.

By 2020, the figure should go up to 75 percent in rural and 33 percent in urban regions, reported the newspaper quoting government ordinance.

BSNL operates 70,000 mobile towers across India.
