Essar Energy Transition (EET) has launched EET Hydrogen Power, Europe’s first hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant (CHP), to be constructed at its Stanlow refinery with a target completion date in 2027.

Investment details were not disclosed.

This investment aims to support EET Fuels’ goal of becoming the world’s lowest carbon process refinery and EET Hydrogen’s ambition to lead the UK’s low carbon hydrogen production. The new plant will also provide low carbon power to other industrial users in the region, aiding their decarbonization efforts.

Transformative Hydrogen Power Plant

The EET Hydrogen Power project will be developed in two phases, ultimately reaching a capacity of 125 MW of power and 6,000 tonnes of steam per day. By replacing hydrocarbons with hydrogen, the plant will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 740,000 tonnes annually.

This new facility will replace Stanlow’s existing boiler units, which currently generate about 50 MW of power for refinery operations. Integral to the decarbonization of EET Fuels’ Stanlow refinery, the plant will contribute to reducing the refinery’s total emissions by 95 percent by 2030.

Key Infrastructure for Decarbonization

EET Hydrogen Power project is a main part of HyNet industrial cluster’s decarbonization strategy and serves as a blueprint for industrial and power decarbonization efforts. The investment will support high-skilled employment growth in the North West of England. This initiative is a significant component of EET’s broader $3.0 billion energy transition investments in the region.

Essar Energy Transition’s portfolio includes:

EET Hydrogen Power

EET Fuels: Owner of the Stanlow Refinery

EET Hydrogen: Developing over 1.35 GW of blue and green hydrogen capacity for the UK market, with future ambitions of 4 GW

Stanlow Terminals Ltd: The UK’s largest independent bulk liquid storage terminal, developing transport and storage infrastructure for biofuels and new energies

Leadership Statements

“Launching EET Hydrogen Power shows the progress that Essar Energy Transition is making in delivering against its commitment to put the UK at the forefront of low carbon energy,” Tony Fountain, Managing Partner of Essar Energy Transition, said.

“EET Hydrogen Power will be Europe’s first 100 percent hydrogen-ready gas-turbine plant, supplied with EET Hydrogen’s low carbon hydrogen,” Rob Wallace, Chief Executive Officer of EET Hydrogen Power, said.
