Siemens Energy has secured a contract to supply two gas turbines and associated components for the Kuo Kuang 2 power plant in Taiwan.

With a planned capacity of 1,200 MW, the plant will play a crucial role in supporting Taiwan’s growing industrial and technology sectors while aligning with the country’s energy transition goals. Taiwan is actively reducing reliance on coal and nuclear energy while significantly expanding renewable and low-carbon power generation, making this project essential for maintaining energy security.

Taiwan produces about 60 percent of the world’s microchips, and with electricity demand projected to increase by 12-13 percent by 2030 — largely driven by AI and high-tech industries—Taiwan is focusing on expanding its clean power infrastructure.

The commissioning of Kuo Kuang 2 will facilitate the decommissioning of older, carbon-intensive power plants. Modern natural gas power plants, like Kuo Kuang 2, emit up to two-thirds less greenhouse gases than coal or oil-fired plants, contributing to Taiwan’s sustainability goals.

Siemens Energy has a longstanding partnership with Kuo Kuang Power, having provided operation and maintenance (O&M) services for the first Kuo Kuang gas-fired power plant unit since its commissioning in 2003.

The Kuo Kuang 2 project follows the recent successful completion of the Sun Ba 2 power plant, another major 1,100 MW facility. This continued collaboration underscores Siemens Energy’s reputation for delivering efficient and reliable energy solutions.

Karim Amin, a member of Siemens Energy’s Executive Board overseeing the Gas Services Business Area, highlighted the significance of the project, stating that Kuo Kuang 2 builds upon the success of Kuo Kuang 1 and reflects the trust in Siemens Energy’s products and services.

The deployment of HL gas turbines will significantly enhance power generation efficiency and contribute to CO2 reduction. Additionally, when combined with renewable energy sources, these turbines enable rapid power plant start-ups, ensuring a stable and dependable power supply for Taiwan.

The construction of Kuo Kuang 2 is being carried out in collaboration with CTCI Corporation, which is responsible for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the facility. Siemens Energy’s scope of supply includes a full power island solution featuring two SGT6-9000HL gas turbines, one SST6-5000 steam turbine, three SGEN6-2000P generators, and the Omnivise T3000 control system.
