The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has conferred on Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina the honor “Champions of the Earth”. It is the highest UNEP recognition for her forward-looking initiatives to halt climate change.
According to a statement issued by UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner, Hasina continues to be an example to follow for world leaders as an early adopter and advocate of climate change adaptation policy.
“These initiatives, from climate change adaptation measures to ecosystem preservation legislation, mean that current and future generations of Bangladeshis are better prepared to address climate change risks and reverse the impacts of environmental degradation,” the statement added.
The award will be presented at the conclusion of the Sustainable Development Goals summit during the UN General Assembly in New York, on September 27.
