West Bengal to roll out electric cars for taxis

The stat of West Bengal in India is contemplating the introduction of electric cars as green taxis in the metropolis, PTI reported.

“We are planning to introduce the first four seater electric car as city cab strictly meant for city limits including Rajarhat and Salt Lake,” state Transport minister Madan Mitra said here today after reviewing the car.

kolkata traffic“We are thinking of naming this as ‘city cab’ and it will be a no refusal cab service,” he added.

Mitra said he had asked its maker Mahindra and Mahindra to discuss with the state transport officials and devise a plan on how to roll out the electric cars as cabs.

E2O, the battery driven green car, if charged for five hours, runs for 100 kms at a maximum speed of 81 kms.

Asked whether the government was planning to offer any subsidy or tax benefit, Mitra said it was too early to comment in this regard.

Mohan Motors managing director Pradip Bajaj said so far ten cars have been sold in the city which was launched early this fiscal.

The on-road price of the electric cars in Kolkata would be Rs 7.68 and Rs 8.05 lakh.
