Greentech Lead America: New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced plans to install around 360 charging stations for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids across the state as part of a five-year initiative to expand their use.
The initiative is part of the Charge NY program unveiled earlier this year. Charge NY aims to create a statewide network of up to 3,000 public and workplace charging stations over the next five years and to put up to 40,000 plug-in vehicles on the road during that period.
This initiative is being spearheaded by both the New York Power Authority (NYPA) and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
As part of the project, the New York Power Authority has announced bids for installing 100 charging stations at 36 locations including transportation hubs and other public and private parking lots, primarily in the Metropolitan New York City area.
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority awarded $3.6 million to 14 organizations to install more than 260 stations from Long Island to Buffalo.
These electric vehicle charging stations are expected to be operational by 2014.
“Building this network of innovative charging stations will encourage New Yorkers to use fuel-efficient alternatives like electric vehicles as well as grow the green industry and jobs in the state,” Governor Cuomo said. “The Charge NY program shows how New York is leading the way toward an electric vehicle future, and it is helping to drive the state’s clean energy economy.”
Some of the companies being funded for this project include Beam Charging; Car Charging Group; EVPass, Syracuse; Access Technology Integration; EV Connect; Sky View Ventures; and PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay Division, Purchase.
