Mercedes-Benz Group’s electric vehicle business accelerated in the third quarter of 2026, with battery electric vehicle sales rising 52 percent year on year to 78,100 cars and vans. New electric models, stronger European demand and increased production activity supported the expansion.
According to the company’s Q3 2026 sales announcement, electric passenger car sales reached a quarterly record of 68,400 units, increasing 61 percent year on year and 29 percent compared with the second quarter.
The EV performance came as total group vehicle sales declined 6 percent to 491,700 units, mainly reflecting challenging market conditions in China. Electric vehicles therefore represented a growing share of Mercedes-Benz’s business even as overall volumes remained under pressure.
Electric Cars Reach 16.8% of Passenger Car Sales
Fully electric vehicles accounted for a record 16.8 percent of Mercedes-Benz Cars sales in Q3 2026, increasing 7.2 percentage points from the same quarter a year earlier.
Including plug-in hybrids, electrified vehicles represented 25 percent of global passenger car sales. This means one in four Mercedes-Benz cars sold during the quarter was either fully electric or a plug-in hybrid.
The distinction matters when assessing the company’s EV progress: the 16.8 percent figure measures battery electric vehicles alone, while the 25 percent figure includes plug-in hybrids.
Mercedes-Benz Cars sold 407,200 vehicles across all powertrains, down 8 percent year on year. Its record electric vehicle volume consequently increased the contribution of BEVs to the passenger car sales mix.
Electric GLC Sales More Than Triple Compared With Q2
The electric GLC led the quarterly EV expansion, with sales more than tripling compared with Q2 2026, according to Mathias Geisen, Mercedes-Benz’s board member responsible for Sales and Customer Experience.
Electric CLA variant sales also increased 24 percent quarter on quarter as the model family entered additional markets, including the United States and Japan. The new electric GLB began its market rollout, adding another SUV to the company’s expanding electric vehicle portfolio.
The product programme continued during the quarter. Orders opened for the electric C 300 4MATIC in Europe in September, while the new GLA entered series production at Rastatt that month.
These launches broaden Mercedes-Benz’s electric offering across compact cars, saloons and SUVs, providing more models through which the company can convert customer orders into deliveries.
European EV Sales Rise 78%
Europe remained the strongest disclosed growth market for Mercedes-Benz’s electric passenger cars.
Regional BEV sales increased 78 percent year on year and 24 percent compared with Q2, reaching a quarterly record. Almost one in three Mercedes-Benz passenger cars sold in Europe was fully electric.
The company said battery electric versions of the GLC, CLA, GLB and GLA were sold out in Europe for the remainder of 2026, with order books extending well into 2027.
To meet demand, the Bremen, Rastatt and Kecskemét plants were operating three-shift schedules. Mercedes-Benz also ranked first in Germany’s BEV fleet market in August, indicating demand from business customers alongside its broader European sales growth.
Total European passenger car sales, including all powertrains, increased 5 percent to 168,700 units. The much faster BEV growth highlights the changing composition of regional demand.
Nine-Month Electric Car Sales Increase 40%
Mercedes-Benz sold 165,500 electric passenger cars during January–September 2026, up 40 percent year on year. Group BEV sales, including vans, reached 191,400 units, increasing 38 percent.
The latest quarterly result builds on the acceleration reported in the company’s second-quarter business update. However, the nine-month figures provide a broader measure of progress than an individual quarter, capturing the contribution of new models as their availability increased.
Electric Van Sales Grow 12%, but Fall From Q2
Mercedes-Benz’s electric van business delivered 9,600 vehicles in Q3, increasing 12 percent year on year, although volumes declined 4 percent compared with Q2.
Electric vans accounted for 11 percent of global van sales, compared with 10 percent a year earlier. In Europe, their share increased to 15 percent, from 14 percent.
Nine-month electric van deliveries reached 25,800 units, up 28 percent, while total van sales across all powertrains declined 1 percent to 258,800 units.
At IAA Transportation 2026, Mercedes-Benz also presented the new electric VLE in an eight-seater shuttle configuration for professional use, extending its electric product programme into passenger transport applications.
European Orders Support the 2027 Delivery Pipeline
Mercedes-Benz’s 2026 electrified vehicle outlook targets a 23–25 percent share of passenger car sales for BEVs and plug-in hybrids.
The Q3 sales mix reached that range, while European orders extending into 2027 provide a pipeline for future electric vehicle deliveries. The next operational test is converting those orders into sales as new models reach more markets and production expands. China remains a challenge: total passenger car sales there fell 31 percent to 86,800 units in Q3. Mercedes-Benz said the electric GLC L, launched locally in July, was ramping up, but did not disclose a separate sales volume for the model.
