Cadillac is set to maiden launch the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of its CT6 sedan in the Chinese market.

The US carmaker made the announcement at the Shanghai Auto Show on Sunday.

Although the company did not reveal any fuel economy figure, it claims the CT6 PHEV boasts fuel economy that is the equivalent of more than twice the distance gasoline-run machines deliver.

Industry observers have suggested that the CT6 could deliver the equivalent of 70 mpg, which is the current highest, or even more.

More information on the new model, the company says, will be made available closer to the introduction of the vehicle in the market.

According to Cadillac, CT6 PHEV would allow the average user to make his daily commute solely powered by the car’s electric motor. But the company has also not revealed the electrical range of the vehicle.

CT6 PHEV has been fitted with rear-wheel electric variable transmission, which, in combination with a two-liter turbo four gas engine and the car’s electric motor, produces about 335 horsepower and 432 lb/ft torque, Cadillac claims.

The carmaker had unveiled the CT6 at the New York International Auto Show in March.

The full-size, five-passenger flagship sedan is lighter than most other cars in its class.

The company will be manufacturing the cars later this year at the Detroit Hamtramck plant of General Motors.

It will get the PHEV version to the Chinese market by next year and in other markets by 2017, the company has stated.
