Google and Voltus Expand Virtual Power Plant Agreement to 1,070 MW in the United States
Google and distributed-energy platform Voltus have expanded their virtual power plant agreement to approximately 1,070 MW of flexible electricity capacity. Announced October 22, the project will operate across the PJM electricity market, which serves approximately 67 million people across 13 US states and Washington, D.C. The agreement expands an earlier 100 MW arrangement. Voltus will aggregate distributed batteries, smart thermostats and other flexible electricity resources from residential and commercial customers. Google will provide funding to compensate participating electricity users through payments and bill savings. The virtual power plant will reduce demand during grid stress periods and support electricity system reliability as data-centre power consumption increases.
Elkem Signs 127 MW Renewable Power Agreement with Landsvirkjun in Iceland Through 2039
Norwegian industrial materials manufacturer Elkem has signed a new long-term electricity supply agreement with Icelandic renewable-energy producer Landsvirkjun. Announced October 23, the contract covers 127 MW of electricity capacity for Elkem’s ferrosilicon manufacturing facility in Iceland and extends through 2039. The agreement replaces an existing power purchase arrangement and operates under a take-or-pay structure. From April 2029, the electricity price will incorporate a fixed floor and partial linkage to market prices for ferrosilicon. Landsvirkjun generates approximately 14 TWh of electricity annually from renewable hydropower, geothermal and wind resources. The agreement provides long-term electricity cost visibility while Elkem evaluates strategic options for its Icelandic manufacturing operations.
Axpo and Fortia Sign 10-Year Wind Power Agreement Supplying 26.28 GWh Annually to Votorantim
Swiss energy company Axpo and Spanish electricity trader Fortia Energía have signed a second renewable electricity purchase agreement serving Votorantim Cimentos in Spain. Announced October 22, the new 10-year contract covers 26.28 GWh of wind-generated electricity annually and became effective October 1, 2026. It supplements an earlier five-year agreement signed in April for the same annual electricity volume. Together, the arrangements represent 52.56 GWh of contracted wind electricity annually while both are active. Fortia will procure electricity from Axpo and supply Votorantim’s Spanish manufacturing operations. The agreement supports the cement producer’s objective of sourcing 50 percent of electricity consumption from clean energy by 2030.
