Germany and Norway Commit Funding to €300 Million Ukraine Renewable Energy Programme

Germany and Norway have committed additional financing to the Renewable Acceleration and Market Development for Ukraine Programme (RAMP-UP), designed to support approximately 1 GW of new renewable-energy capacity. Germany committed €44.7 million through KfW Development Bank, while Norway contributed approximately €10 million through Norad. The agreements were signed on October 7–8 and subsequently reported during October 12–13. Total programme commitments have reached approximately €290 million, against a €300 million target. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and World Bank developed the price-stabilisation mechanism to support long-term renewable electricity revenues. The programme aims to mobilise up to €1.5 billion in private investment, with initial renewable-energy auctions expected before the end of 2026.

Globeleq Awards EPC Contract for 56 MWp Kafue Solar Project in Zambia

African independent power producer Globeleq has appointed Solarcentury Africa and Alensy Energy Solutions as joint engineering, procurement and construction contractors for its 40 MWac/56 MWp Kafue solar project in Zambia. The appointment was announced October 14 following the project’s recent financial close. The installation will be built near Kafue Town in Lusaka Province and is expected to begin electricity generation in Q3 2027. Construction is expected to create approximately 200 local jobs. Globeleq owns the project and has secured a 25-year power purchase agreement with ZESCO. Financing includes $52.1 million from FMO and British International Investment, alongside support for grid infrastructure from Norway.

China Connects 1 GW Solar PV and Concentrated Solar Power Project with Eight-Hour Thermal Storage

Chinese infrastructure company PowerChina has connected a 1 GW hybrid solar project to the grid in Gonghe County, Qinghai Province. The project reached full-capacity grid connection on October 1, with further technical details reported during October 9–13. The facility combines 900 MW of photovoltaic generation and a 100 MW molten-salt concentrated solar power plant. The thermal system includes eight hours of storage, a 219-metre receiver tower and 10,310 heliostats. Approximately 1.9 million photovoltaic modules have been installed. A 20 MW electric heater enables surplus photovoltaic electricity to be stored as heat. Annual generation is expected to reach approximately 2.2 TWh, with estimated emissions avoidance of 2.07 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.
