Wartsila Brings 150 MW / 300 MWh Bungama Battery Into Commercial Operation
Wartsila has brought a 150 MW / 300 MWh battery energy storage system into commercial operation for Revera Energy at Bungama in South Australia. The two-hour BESS provides large-scale flexible capacity to a power system adding significant volumes of wind and solar generation. The battery can charge during periods of abundant or lower-cost electricity and discharge during higher-demand periods, supporting frequency control, grid reliability and renewable integration. South Australia already operates with some of the world’s highest shares of variable renewable electricity, increasing the value of fast-response storage. The Bungama project strengthens Wärtsilä’s Australian energy-storage footprint and demonstrates the continuing scale-up of grid batteries from tens of megawatts toward projects capable of delivering hundreds of megawatt-hours per cycle.
SSE Wins Approval for 80 MW / 320 MWh Mullafarry Battery in Ireland
SSE has secured planning consent from Mayo County Council for a revised 80 MW / 320 MWh Mullafarry battery energy storage project near Killala in North Mayo. The four-hour BESS will contain up to 64 battery-storage units and will be built on an SSE-owned site adjacent to the company’s 104 MW Tawnaghmore Power Station. The revised design significantly increases the project’s storage potential. Subject to a final investment decision, construction could take up to two years. Mullafarry is intended to store electricity during periods of high renewable output and release it when grid demand rises, helping Ireland integrate increasing wind and solar capacity. The project also adds flexible infrastructure to SSE’s wider renewable and power portfolio in Ireland’s northwest.
Orsted Files Plans for Up to 2 GW Dadu 2 Offshore Wind Farm in Taiwan Orsted has filed early-stage documentation for Dadu 2, a proposed offshore wind farm of up to 2 GW in the Taiwan Strait. The development area covers roughly 234 square kilometres and is located around 38 km off Changhua County. Ørsted is considering turbines with individual ratings ranging from approximately 14 MW to 22 MW, reflecting the increasing scale of next-generation offshore technology. Dadu 2 would materially expand Ørsted’s Taiwanese offshore wind pipeline, building on its existing Greater Changhua developments. At 2 GW, the project could require around 90–140 turbines depending on the final turbine rating. The filing is an early development milestone, with environmental assessment, seabed studies, grid arrangements and future auction participation still required before investment and construction.
