SoftBank Launches GWh-Scale Battery and BESS Business in Japan

SoftBank has launched a new Japan-based battery manufacturing and energy storage business aimed at supporting rapidly growing electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company plans to manufacture advanced battery cells and battery energy storage systems (BESS) at gigawatt-hour scale from its new GX Factory in Sakai, Osaka.  The initiative will be centred around SoftBank’s Osaka Sakai AI Data Center campus, developed on the former Sharp factory site. Battery production is expected to begin in fiscal 2027 with mass production targeted around fiscal 2028. SoftBank is collaborating with South Korea’s COSMOS LAB on zinc-halogen batteries that use water-based electrolytes for improved safety and non-flammability, while DeltaX will support development of high-density energy storage systems.  SoftBank plans to deploy the batteries initially for its own AI data centres before expanding into grid-scale, industrial and residential applications in Japan and overseas markets. The company aims to generate more than ¥100 billion in annual battery business revenue by 2030.

Envision Joins 300MW Wind and Battery Hybrid Project in Canada

Envision Energy has signed a partnership agreement with Cape Breton China Corp to explore development of a 300MW hybrid wind and battery energy storage project in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. The project is designed to combine wind generation with battery storage to deliver more flexible and dispatchable renewable electricity to the regional grid.  The proposed development marks an expansion of Envision’s North American operations and reflects growing demand for integrated renewable energy systems that combine generation, storage and grid optimisation. Alongside project development, Envision plans to establish local training and education programmes focused on wind power, battery storage and future energy systems development.  The hybrid project is intended to improve grid flexibility, support renewable integration and strengthen energy transition efforts in Eastern Canada. Envision said the initiative demonstrates a more system-oriented approach to renewable deployment, combining intelligent optimisation with large-scale wind and storage infrastructure to enhance long-term reliability and commercial viability.

CMG CleanTech to Acquire Singapore-Based Enercon Asia

CMG CleanTech has agreed to acquire Singapore-based Enercon Asia Pte. Ltd. in an all-share transaction valued at approximately USD 70 million. The proposed deal remains subject to regulatory approvals and definitive agreements.  Enercon Asia provides integrated energy and power solutions across solar, wind, battery storage, generators, grid integration and advanced control systems. The company also specialises in generator synchronisation, automation, switchgear systems and power quality solutions for offshore platforms, industrial facilities and data centres, exporting to more than 20 countries. CMG said the acquisition will expand its presence into Asian markets while strengthening its vertically integrated clean energy offering by combining Enercon’s grid integration and battery storage expertise with CMG’s hydrogen and solar technologies. The transaction highlights continued consolidation and investment across the renewable energy and storage sector as companies seek broader geographic reach, integrated energy capabilities and stronger positions in fast-growing clean infrastructure markets.
