Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook) has signed an agreement with French utility Engie to buy all the power generated from Engie’s upcoming Sypert solar power plant in the U.S., expected to produce 260 MW when it starts operating in late 2025.

The Sypert plant will join Engie’s substantial North American renewable portfolio, adding to its 8 GW of solar, wind, and battery storage projects.

Earlier in October, Engie also entered into a solar power purchase agreement with Google for its Chillingham solar project, Engie’s largest U.S. solar initiative so far, Reuters news report said.

The Joe Biden administration has encouraged tech giants to invest in clean energy to meet rising demand, particularly from data centers.

According to Goldman Sachs, U.S. data center power needs may triple by 2030, driven by technologies like AI, requiring an additional 47 GW of generation capacity, with natural gas, wind, and solar projected to fill this demand.
