Sonelgaz and GE Vernova Expand Joint Venture to Boost Energy Solutions in Algeria

GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business, a leading provider of advanced grid technologies, and Sonelgaz, Algeria’s national electricity and gas company, have announced plans to enhance capabilities at GE Algeria Turbines (GEAT) for the deployment of grid solutions.

This strategic move, facilitated through amendments to their existing joint venture, marks a significant advancement toward fulfilling Algeria’s energy objectives. The agreement underscores a mutual commitment to expedite sustainable energy development, localize industrial capacities, and stimulate economic growth.

Established in 2014, GEAT is a joint venture between Sonelgaz and GE Vernova, specializing in the production of skids, turbine auxiliaries, gas turbines, steam turbines, and control systems in Algeria. Situated in Ain Yagout, Batna, the facility stands as GE Vernova’s unique African presence.

Recognizing the evolving needs of Algerian power grids, Sonelgaz and GE Vernova have amended their shareholders’ agreement to diversify GEAT’s core operations. The joint venture will focus on manufacturing high and extra-high voltage substations, alongside other power grid automation equipment and solutions aimed at facilitating efficient and reliable power transmission.

The localization of industrial production holds the potential to bolster national engineering capabilities and generate additional employment opportunities in Algeria. The collaboration between Sonelgaz and GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business signifies a pivotal step in Algeria’s energy transition and the development of domestic equipment production capacity for the transmission grid.

“Through this collaboration, we aim to introduce advanced Grid Solutions technologies in Algeria, modernizing the country’s grid, enhancing its efficiency, and accelerating its energy transition,” Philippe Piron, President and CEO of GE Vernova’s Electrification Systems business, said.
