Siemens has received an order from Vattenfall for the supply of 72 Model SWT-4.0-130 wind turbines for its new Sandbank offshore wind farm.

Construction is scheduled to commence in summer 2015 and commissioning is expected at the end of 2016.

Sandbank will be known as one of the modern offshore wind farms, due to the most advanced agro-elastic blades and rotor of the turbines built with the technical support from Siemens.

Siemens has also grabbed the Vattenfall maintenance contract for Sandbank installations for an initial period of five years.

The project is coming up in the economic zone, off the German North Sea coast. According to a service plan, this project will work in coordination with the nearby DanTysk offshore wind farm, in order to minimize the maintenance costs.

Construction of the DanTysk wind farm is in progress, equipped with Siemens wind turbines of the G4 product platform.

Besides, a Service Operation Vessel (SOV), specially designed for the service operations of both wind farms will be deployed.

This ship fitted with a workshop and technicians on board will be positioned between the two wind farms after commissioning.

In addition, a helicopter will be in service for the crew to be ferried between land and wind turbines, irrespective of weather and sea conditions.

Siemens’ Model SWT-4.0-130 combines the technology of 900 units rated at 3.6 megawatts and a power output of 4 megawatts at low maintenance costs.

With the benefit of Vattenfall’s expertise in project construction and operation and Siemens’ technology and services, Sandbank will demonstrate how the costs of offshore wind power has been reduced, said, Markus Tacke, CEO, Wind Power Division Siemens Energy.

The Sandbank project proves Vattenfall’s strategy of focusing the growth efforts on the expansion of renewable energy. It is a significant building block in the success of the energy transition in Germany, commented, Gunnar Groebler, head, Renewables Business Unit, Vattenfall, UK.
