RWE has signed an agreement to sell its F.E.W. Baltic II offshore wind development project in the Polish Baltic Sea to Polish energy major PGE, marking a strategic portfolio adjustment while reaffirming its long-term commitment to Poland’s energy transition.
The F.E.W. Baltic II project has a planned generation capacity of 350 megawatts and is located around 50 kilometres from the Polish coastline, north of the town of Ustka. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, subject to customary conditions.
As part of the agreement, RWE has already completed the transfer of the Environmental Decision and associated project data for the adjacent offshore wind development site, known as 44.E.1., to PGE. This transfer enables PGE to further advance offshore wind development activities in the Polish Baltic Sea.
Strategic rationale behind the transaction
RWE stated that the decision to sell the Baltic II project reflects a strategic assessment of how best to deliver the project at scale. According to the company, PGE’s existing offshore and broader energy portfolio positions it more strongly to realise the development efficiently and in synergy with its other assets.
Sven Utermöhlen, Chief Executive Officer of RWE Offshore Wind, said that while RWE remains firmly committed to expanding its offshore wind portfolio globally, PGE is better placed to progress this specific project on a standalone basis. He added that RWE’s growth ambitions in offshore wind remain unchanged.
Continued commitment to Poland’s energy transition
Despite exiting this offshore wind development, RWE underlined its continued commitment to supporting Poland’s transition to clean energy. The company is actively developing, constructing and operating a diverse pipeline of renewable energy projects across the country, with a strong focus on onshore wind and solar power.
RWE currently operates onshore wind and solar installations in Poland with a combined installed capacity of more than 660 megawatts. These assets play a key role in expanding renewable generation, improving energy security and supporting decarbonisation targets in the Polish power sector.
RWE’s global offshore wind leadership
RWE remains one of the world’s leading players in offshore wind energy. The company currently operates 19 offshore wind farms across five countries, with a total installed capacity of 6.2 gigawatts. RWE’s ownership share in these operational projects amounts to 3.3 gigawatts.
In addition, RWE is constructing four large-scale offshore wind projects in four European countries. These include the Sofia project off the coast of northern England, Thor in Denmark, OranjeWind off the Dutch coast, and the Nordseecluster north of the German island of Juist. Once completed, these projects will deliver a combined generation capacity of 4.8 gigawatts, with RWE’s share accounting for 3.1 gigawatts.
Strengthening Poland’s offshore wind market For PGE, the acquisition of the F.E.W. Baltic II project and the associated environmental approvals strengthens its offshore wind pipeline and supports Poland’s ambition to develop large-scale renewable capacity in the Baltic Sea. Offshore wind is expected to play a central role in the country’s long-term energy strategy by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and increasing domestic clean power generation.
