RWE says the first batch of monopile foundations for its Thor offshore wind farm has arrived at Eemshaven port in the Netherlands. The monopiles, up to 100 meters long and weighing 1,500 tonnes each, will support wind turbines in Denmark’s North Sea.
Key Highlights:
Major Infrastructure: A total of 72 monopiles will be handled at Eemshaven, a critical logistics hub for the project. Buss Terminal Eemshaven is providing storage, heavy lifting, and port logistics.
Project Timeline: The monopiles will be transported to the Thor construction site in spring 2025. Turbine installation will begin in 2026 from the Port of Esbjerg, Denmark, and the project is expected to be fully operational by 2027, generating over 1 GW of power — enough to supply more than one million Danish homes.
Local Job Creation: The Port of Thorsminde will serve as the project’s operation and maintenance base, creating 50-60 local jobs.
Global Offshore Wind Leader: RWE operates 19 offshore wind farms and is actively expanding, with projects in the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands. The company aims to increase its global offshore wind capacity from 3.3 GW to 10 GW by 2030.
