GE has been selected to supply wind turbines to Sweden’s Erikshester wind farm, which is expected to produce 9.6 MWs of electricity.

The company will supply six GE 1.6-100 wind turbines to the farm.

The contract further strengthens GE’s present in the Nordic region. With this contract, GE’s wind energy total in the region to more than 300 megawatts (MW) of power, the company said.

The 1.6-100 wind turbines especially suited for the varying wind conditions in Sweden, said Mårten Hermansson, chairman of Erikshester Vindpark. “We need our wind farm to maintain high productivity and GE’s wind turbines offer proven efficiency and adaptive abilities.”

Sweden had set an ambitious target of achieving renewable energy share of 49 percent by 2020; however, the country is now hoping to achieve 50 percent share from renewable energy.

Under the five-year service agreement, GE will also provide round-the-clock remote monitoring and diagnostics through GE’s global wind monitoring center in Salzbergen, Germany, which monitors wind turbines in Europe, Africa and Asia.

GE has designed a variety of machines to generate renewable energy in various wind conditions.

At the European Wind Energy Association’s annual conference, GE has just launched 2.75-120 wind turbine, a smarter, more powerful turbine, designed to provide 5 percent more annual energy production than GE’s 2.5-120 model. The turbine is available with various tower technologies, ranging between 85-139 meters, and optional energy storage, GE said.

Recently GE launched 2.85-103 wind turbine in Japan, which is specifically designed for higher turbulence wind conditions and typhoon class wind speeds and lighting beyond the current IEC standard.
