The Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) and its partner organizations have dedicated the Pantex Renewable Energy Project (PREP) near Amarillo.

The project involves a federally owned wind farm with a capacity of producing 47million KW hours of electricity annually.

National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA),a subsidiary of the state –run energy department, was responsible for the installation and operations of the entire project.

Ron Curry, regional administrator, EPA, said,” The NNSA and Pantex have proved their expertness by converting a clean site into a source of renewable energy. The innovation delivered by the company display the natural link between the economic benefit and environmental sustainability.”

About 60 percent of the energy produced from wind farm is provided to the Pantex Power Plant nearby, where assembling and maintenance of the nuclear weapons takes place.

Pantex and NNSA received an award from EPA officials for their joint contribution towards innovative reuse of the site. Cleanup process of the contaminated groundwater is going on.
