Siemens has signed contracts for energy projects — including clean energy ventures — worth 8 billion euros with Egypt.

Together the projects under the contract, including high-efficiency natural gas-fired power plants and wind power installations, are to add 16.4 gigawatts to Egypt’s national grid.

The projects can boost power generation capacity of Egypt by more than 50 percent, Siemens has reported in a statement.

The company has stated that it will supply three natural gas-fired combined cycle power plants — Beni Suef, Burullus and New Capital — with capacity of 4.8 gigawatts each.

Eight Siemens H-Class gas turbines will be installed at the projects, according to the statement.

The supply will be undertaken in association with Egyptian partners Elsewedy Electric and Orascom Construction for a total combined capacity of 14.4GW.

The first phase of the project comprising capacity of 4.4 GW is expected to go online before the summer of 2017.

In terms of wind projects, Siemens is to deliver 600 wind turbines to 12 wind farms in the Gulf of Suez and West Nile. It translates into total installed capacity of 2GW.

Siemens has also announced plans to build a rotor blade manufacturing facility in Egypt’s Ain Soukhna region. The facility is scheduled to go into operation in the second half of 2017.

The company has been doing business in Egypt since 1859 and opened its first office in Cairo in 1901. The company’s technology has been implemented in the Attaka, Nubaria, Talkha, Damietta, Sidi Krir, Cairo West, Ayoun Mousa, Midelec and El Kureimat power plants.

It is also a key technology supplier for major projects in mobility, healthcare and manufacturing sectors.
