Montana Renewables receives $1.44 bn loan guarantee

Calumet’s Montana Renewables has received a conditional $1.44 billion loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Energy to fund the expansion of its renewable fuels facility.

Major capacity increase: The expansion will make Montana Renewables one of the largest Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) producers globally, with a projected capacity of 300 million gallons of SAF and 330 million gallons of combined SAF and renewable diesel.

Key projects: The expansion will include a second renewable fuels reactor, SAF blending and logistics, renewable hydrogen production, and on-site water recycling capabilities, aligning with strategic low-emission goals.

Economic impact: By 2028, the Great Falls site is expected to support a population of 4,400 people and contribute to regional development through job creation and support for agriculture and renewable feedstock industries.

Job creation: The expansion will create 450 construction jobs at its peak and 40 permanent operations jobs, boosting local employment and infrastructure development.
