The government of India is planning to distribute solar powered devices such as cookers and ‘unnat chulhas‘ in rural areas and among tribal communities.
Economic Times reports that the initiative is part of the government’s efforts to provide clean cooking and lighting to populations in the back of beyond localities.
Funding for the project is to be drawn from Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA).
The program, a statement says, has been brought under the definition of forest protection and conservation measures and management of notified forest or protected areas.
CAMPA has already issued a circular to states and Union territories detailing guidelines of the program and utilization of funds.
MNRE has asked states and union territories to fix targets for distribution of renewable energy devices for the next five years.
