e-STORAGE, a subsidiary of CSI Solar, which is owned by Canadian Solar, has secured a contract for 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh) DC of energy storage solutions. The contract was awarded for the Roadrunner Reserve System project in Arizona, developed by DEPCOM Power and Tucson Electric Power (TEP).

e-STORAGE will provide its energy storage solution, SolBank, for the project, which boasts a rated capacity of 200 megawatts (MW) and a total storage capacity of 800 megawatt-hours (MWh) AC.

TEP will be responsible for owning and operating this project, which is set to become the largest energy storage system on TEP’s grid and one of the largest in Arizona. This energy storage project will have the capacity to power around 42,000 homes for up to four hours, providing a significant boost to the region’s grid reliability.

This latest contract marks the second substantial project in Arizona for e-STORAGE, following the initiation of the Papago Storage project (1,200 MWh / 1,519 MWh DC nominal) in August 2023. The Papago project is expected to become operational by late 2024, while the Road Runner Reserve System project is scheduled to commence operations in the summer of 2025.

SolBank, the energy storage solution provided by e-STORAGE, is designed to prioritize safety, incorporating the use of LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) cells, highly efficient liquid cooling systems, and multi-level fire safety management systems. It also features cutting-edge monitoring and control systems and an active cell balancing system to ensure both safety and optimal product performance.

e-STORAGE has an impressive track record, having implemented over 3.3 GWh DC of battery energy storage solutions in various locations across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and China. This brings their total installed capacity and contracted pipeline to 12.4 GWh DC, cementing e-STORAGE’s position as a global industry leader in energy storage integration.

The company operates two state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities with a combined annual capacity of 10 GWh and is dedicated to providing high-quality, scalable energy storage solutions that contribute to the advancement of clean energy adoption.
