Polaris Smart Metering has reached a major milestone in India’s power distribution digitization journey, announcing that it has manufactured and deployed more than 1 million smart meters across multiple markets under the Government of India’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).

The milestone was marked by the unveiling of the one millionth smart meter at the company’s manufacturing facility in Jaipur, attended by senior government officials and industry stakeholders. The facility highlights Polaris’ focus on indigenous manufacturing, scalable deployment and alignment with national power sector reforms.

Shri Ajitabh Sharma, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary (Energy) and Chairman of Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (RVPN), emphasized the growing role of smart metering in India’s evolving energy ecosystem. He said the increasing share of renewable energy and planned battery energy storage expansion will make smart meters critical for demand flexibility and grid management. He added that the value of smart metering lies in robust data management, integrated platforms and improved decision-making that enhance grid visibility and operational efficiency.

Yashraj Khaitan, Founder and CEO of Polaris Smart Metering, described the achievement as a validation of the company’s execution capabilities under RDSS. He said the milestone reflects the trust of utilities and state governments and the efforts of teams working on large-scale deployments. According to Khaitan, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solutions enable two-way communication between utilities and consumers and support the development of a smarter and financially sustainable power distribution ecosystem.

Rajeev Sharma, Chairman of Polaris Group, said smart metering is essential for building a financially viable power sector. He noted that smart meters help reduce Aggregate Technical and Commercial losses and enable the integration of renewable energy, adding that the company aims to reach the 2 million meter milestone in the near future.

Large-scale AMI deployment is transforming power distribution by improving billing accuracy, reducing losses, strengthening utility operations and providing consumers with greater transparency and control over energy consumption.

Polaris currently has an annual manufacturing capacity of 5 million meters. Through its Polaris NOVA facility, the company plans to double capacity to 10 million meters per year by mid-2026 to support rising demand from utilities.

The company works closely with distribution companies across several states, offering end-to-end smart metering solutions that cover manufacturing, deployment, system integration and data security. Its solutions are designed to be interoperable and scalable to support long-term digital transformation of utilities.

Polaris Smart Metering, formerly known as Gram Power, was founded in 2010 in California by Yashraj Khaitan. The company was among the early innovators in smart microgrids and smart metering in India. Today, it focuses on delivering integrated AMI solutions that help utilities reduce distribution losses, improve operational efficiency and provide real-time energy insights to consumers.

Polaris has completed smart metering implementations in Bihar and Ladakh and currently holds an order book worth approximately USD 1.1 billion across projects in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Manipur, covering 10 million electric meters. The company also supplies 1.6 million smart gas meters for city gas distribution companies.

Backed by I Squared Capital, Polaris aims to expand its role in India’s digital energy transition and continue deploying Made in India solutions that support transparent, efficient and intelligent energy systems.
