NextEra Energy joins with Queens Ballpark to green power Citi Field

NextEra Energy has announced a plan to offset the environmental impacts of electricity supplied for Citi Field for the next three years.

NextEra Energy is corresponding 100 percent of the electricity used to power Citi Field, equivalent to 58,500 renewable energy certificates (REC), through June 2016.

Through this partnership with NextEra Energy, Citi Field will remain as one of the most sustainable ballparks of the nation. As an open-air stadium leader, it is a matter of strive for excellence in regard to an initiative such as sustainability, said, Mike Landeen, senior vice president, Venue Services and Operations, New York Mets.

The RECs being provided are Green-e certified, a program of the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions that guarantees both environmental integrity and consumer protection.

RECs signify all the environmental attributes of electricity production from renewable energy projects. For every megawatt-hour of renewable energy production, a REC is created.

This is a substantial initiative for all those involved with Citi Field to be a part of this carbon offsetting and sustainability efforts, said, Rick Anderson, senior director, Business Development, NextEra Energy.
