With the release of the Standardization Roadmap: Energy Efficiency in the Built Environment, the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) along with U.S. industry, government  and other energy efficiency stakeholders form a national framework for action and coordination on future energy efficiency standardization.

Developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Energy Efficiency Standardization Coordination Collaborative (EESCC) is a group chaired by the US Department of Energy (DOE) representatives and Schneider Electric. The roadmap charts 125 recommendations to increase energy efficiency within the built environment.

Jane Weissman, president, CEO, IREC, said, “IREC is working to bridge the gaps between training programs and the employees need for clean energy workforce considering energy efficiency.”

Around fifty member organizations and four federal agencies took part in the standardization development roadmap participated by 160 industry experts, standards organizations, energy related organizations and educational institutions.

America’s buildings account for around 70 percent of total US electricity use and 40 percent of the nation’s total energy bill. This costs around $400 billion per year. According to DOE, energy reductions techniques will have to the potential to save an estimated $80 billion annually.

Increased awareness and coordination among the public and private sectors on standards, codes, and conformity assessment will accelerate the energy efficiency technology development and deployment program.
