Grid-scale energy storage and integration services provider Greensmith has added energy storage aggregation function to its fourth generation GEMS energy storage software platform.

The new function allows owners and operators of multiple distributed energy storage systems to aggregate different systems into a single energy storage resource.

It also helps them manage energy better and integrate it with utility or ISO market communications systems. The facility also helps respond suitably to wholesale energy market needs.

According a statement, the system helps boost revenue and return on investment from energy storage systems.

The market for distributed energy storage, in general, and behind-the-meter energy storage, specifically, is growing rapidly.

In Q2, 2015, energy storage systems totaling capacity of 40.7 megawatts were deployed in the US.

It was a nine-fold increase from figures of Q2, 2014, and a six-fold increase from the Q1, 2015.

Also behind-the-meter energy storage market grew by more than eleven times in Q2, 2015, compared with Q2, 2014.

GEMS software platform optimizes the performance of batteries, inverters and other hardware connected to grid-scale energy storage systems, lowering costs and improving return on investment of such systems.

More than 20 customers of Greensmith use the GEMS energy storage software platform. They use the system for multiple applications at 50 sites, including the single largest battery-based energy storage system deployed globally in 2014.
