GE Power & Water’s Distributed Power Business announced a new, larger 10 MW Jenbacher J920 FleXtra gas engine for 60 Hz North American market.

This will be the highest available electrical efficiency produced commercially and will be sufficient to light up more than 6,000 U.S homes, the company said

With a five-minute start-up time, FleXtra J920 gas engine is scalable for any plant size.

GE signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Sky Global Partners, an independent power producer, to support the development of this North American power project featuring FleXtra J920 gas engine technology. Under this agreement, GE will provide six natural gas fuelled FleXtra gas engines to Sky Global.

Lorraine Bolsinger, CEO and president, GE’s Distributed Power, said, “FleXtra gas engines offer 49 percent of electrical efficiency for 60 Hz power plant enhancing minimum fuel consumption. Introduction of latest gas engine technology to 60 Hz power segment lets the company meet customer’s needs with a flexible and quick response solution worldwide.”

Advanced technology features like two-stage turbocharging and 8.6 MW capacities ensure that FleXtra engine is an ideal solution for combined heat and power applications generating more than 90percent efficiency, GE said.

Rapid stop and start cycle feature of FleXtra engine makes the product an ideal one for ensuring decentralized power supply even in hot and high-altitude areas. J920 FleXtra helps enable the integration of renewables onto the grid. Due to low water consumption FleXtra engine is suitable for water constraint areas.

J920 FleXtra can be activated during low renewable supply periods or during tariff hikes and stopped quickly during high feeds in renewable energy, added Bolsinger.

FleXtra uses specifically designed technology like fast-load tracking capability to face challenges regarding performance and core compliance. This gas engine can provide load following, automatic generation control as well as supplemental reserve without affecting cost and maintenance schedule.

FleXtra J920 is an ecomagination qualified product satisfying environmental standards. The company achieved this certificate through rigorous efforts creating greater product efficiency   using limited resources. GE’ S FleXtra engine can prevent 1,500 tons of carbon emission annually with savings on 6.4 million KW hours of natural gas per year.
